Instructors of South East Freestyle Karatedo train Students in techniques for self protection against "structured" fighting, as well as "street" fighting. The training includes defence against weapons such as knife or gun, and against single or multiple attackers.
The emphasis of training for Students is always that it is better to avoid or walk (or run!) away from trouble. Violence can only be a final resort and when no other option exists to prevent immediate harm to the individual or to those they care for.
Instructors teach many aspects of Martial Arts to improve an individuals martial style and ability. These include Punching, Kicking, Blocking, Grappling, Nerve Holds, Balance and Co-ordination, Locks, Strikes, Take Downs, Leg Sweeps, etc. etc.
S.E.F Karate facilities include training halls, mats, punch bags, focus pads etc to develop greater speed, power and confidence for Students. Perhaps the greatest resource available to the students is the years of knowledge and experience that the many Black Belts in the club provide.
S.E.F Karate Black Belts and other senior grades remain approachable and friendly and will always provide an answer for queries, as well as offer practical help to assist with techniques etc.
The core of the style taught is JIYU RYU Freestyle Karate, as founded and developed by GODAN John Fewins (see Biographies), but we also use different techniques that come from other discipline's to make our style more effective in situations where you may have to protect yourself or others.
Gradings are held periodically at the club. Beginners commence as white belts and then with sufficient training are encouraged to regrade to match their achievements.
The belt colours for grading are: Yellow (6th Kyu), Orange (5th Kyu), Green (4th Kyu), Blue (3rd Kyu), Brown (2nd Kyu), Brown with Black Stripe (1st Kyu) and then it is Black Belt (1st Dan Shodan).
Black Belt (or Dan) gradings continue up to 3rd Dan, with further awards made for specific achievements.
Help build your self confidence learn to defend your self in a controlled but relaxed environment Become fitter, more flexible, stronger and learn self control from instructors with years of experience. Ages from 7 years - Adult, Male & Female
